Super Dollfie: The Ultimate Fashion Doll, Part 2

Last time I talked about ways to customize your Super Dollfie. In this article, I'll tell you about the Super Dollfies themselves; in short, what you can start with. As you look at the dolls, keep in mind the ways you can alter them to suit your personal vision, so that you can find the perfect doll to work with. Also check the various editions of one doll; some of them are vastly different, and it can help you come up with ideas for your own Super Dollfie. Nono, in particular, has appeared in a wide variety of wigs and makeups.

As I said at the beginning of my last article, I am relatively new to the world of Super Dollfie, so commentary from experienced collectors is welcome. I think, however, buying lots of Super Dollfie via Rinkya so that my boss can give me a raise and I can become a Super Dollfie collector myself would be an even more effective route to enlightenment. I leave the choice up to you.

If you already know about Super Dollfie models and just want to find your favorite, use the below index to skip directly to the appropriate section.

      Super Dollfie Cute

Super Dollfie Models

There are two basic kinds of SD models, the Standard Model and the Limited Model. Standard Models are the most basic SDs: they come either nude (Old Make) or with underwear (New Make and New Body). They also come semi-assembled or as a kit. "Semi-assembled" means the doll's limbs are attached to the torso, but the head is not, the eyes are not placed, and the wig is not attached. You may also need to file down seams remaining from the molding process. The dolls who come as kits (some of the MSDs) are completely unassembled. With the dolls that come with underwear, the female dolls come with a slip and shorts, and male dolls come with a T-shirt and shorts.

Limited Models are, as you would expect, limited editions. The doll usually comes assembled except for the wig and undressed, but with a full set of clothing, sometimes by famous designers for humans. The dolls often have exclusive wigs, heads, makeup, or eyes; in the case of the new Tenshi no Sato set, they even have exclusive bodies. The Limited Models are also often the same dolls as the Standard Models except for different eyes, wigs, makeup, or costumes. Sometimes the Limited Model will only be for sale at a given Volks showroom. A popular Limited Model may later become available as a Standard Model, as MSD Ken and MSD Mika did.

There is a special kind of Limited Model known as the "One-Off Model." This is a limited edition that was only available for purchase at a given event such as one of the many Dolls Party (aka "Dorupa") conventions. These are the most exclusive of Super Dollfies.

Clicking on the doll's name will bring up its page on the Volks site (click on the smaller pictures to bring up that image in the large view to the right). This shows what what the Volks prototype doll looks like (although unclothed standard models are generally clothed in those shots). The "on YJ" link will search YJ for that doll. Keep in mind that just because the Standard Model for a given doll comes with a Black, Straight wig and Brown eyes does not mean the one on auction doesn't come with a Waffle wig in Ivory and Light Violet eyes. In fact, you'll freqently see dolls on auction that have one doll's head, some other doll's body, a wig from a third, and eyes from a fourth! Therefore, I do not only go with my usual recommendations of using the description searches (see item 2 of our Shopping Tips) and checking the general searches, but I also strongly recommend using the "Translate" button, which appears in the Rinkya bar when you're viewing an auction. The translation is hardly conversational English, but at least you should be able to tell which head is going on which body. Don't forget that you'll need to go back into the Rinkya window to bid.

All romanizations of names are per the Volks's sites (although translations are, of course, my own). If usage is not consistent on the sites (and it often isn't), I chose the one that seems to me most accurate. If you're not accustomed to the variations among different systems of romanization, "sy" is pronounced "sh." Capitalized colors ("Brown" rather than "brown") refer to official Volks color names. Volks is not always clear on which kind of glass the eyes are made of; if I don't specify, that's because I could not make a determination.

Important Search Tip: Searches for Standard Models (or for something called just "Limited Model" when there isn't a Standard one) have only the doll's name, so do try them if the more specific Limited Model and One-Off Model searches don't have any hits. Don't forget to try the general searches at the end of the first article! They're always your best bet, even if they take a lot longer to go through.

Super Dollfie Cutes (SDCs)

This new category of Super Dollfie, introduced at Doll Party 11, is supposed to be between the SD and the MSD in age, although the doll itself is slightly smaller than the MSD (I couldn't find a height, but all the other measurements were slightly lower than the MSD's). It has a uniquely sized wig, too.

Kaeda (8/1/04) (on YJ): The very first of this new line, the Limited Model Kaeda has 16 mm HG Glass Gray eyes and a two-tone wig, Mix Gold roots with what look to be Ivory ends.

Mini Super Dollfies (MSDs)

Until the beginning of this monthe, these were the smallest Super Dollfies, measuring 42 cm (16.5 in). Some MSDs also have SD versions; I will note those as appropriate. Most MSD Standard Models come completely unassembled and without makeup, although of course ones you buy on YJ may have been put together and made up by the seller. I will note when a Standard Model has a semi-assmbled version. None of the MSD Standard Models seem to come with any clothing, even though many of the pictures on the Volks sites show them clothed.

MSD Akira (3/03) (on YJ): At present, there is only a Limited Model, although there was a One-Off Model released in South Korea. Akira's eyes are 14 mm glass in Green Gray (by which Volks means "gray green"). He has New Make makeup, and his legs are Long. His wig appears to be Boys' Short in Natural (W-55N-2). Akira was released as part of the opening celebration for the Funabashi showroom.

Asami (8/25/02) (on YJ): Because of the way her name is written in Japanese, you may see her name mistransliterated as "Mami." She comes only in a Limited Model. Her wig appears to be custom, but it's definitely related to the Short Bob. I'd guess her eyes are 16 mm, although I was not able to confirm the color.

Elsie (3/20/2004) (on YJ): Supposed to be a child from the English countryside, Elsie comes with HG Glass eyes, 16mm, Blue with Black Line; an exclusive wig in Dark Gold; Airbrush Gradation makeup; and the MSD female body. She was released at Kyoto Dolls Party 2.

    Elza (8/25/02) (on YJ)

    Enn

Limited Model (5/22/04) (on YJ): Enn is a celebration of a Super Dollfie TV special. He has the MSD boy New Body, 16 mm Cobalt HG glass eyes, and an original wig (that looks very much like the Boys' Short II, however).

One-Off Model: Dolls Party 11 (8/1/04) (on YJ)

MSD F-04 Head: I have not included searches for each of the Full Choice System heads (if you would like that, let me know!), but these are a complete dolls that happen to use that head.

      One-Off Models

Tokyo Dolls Party 2 (3/20/04) (on YJ): I could not get any other specs, but I assume the doll is in Pure Skin.

Dolls Party 11 (click on the third picture from the bottom) (8/1/04) (on YJ): Her Body is made of White Pure Skin, so I suppose she has a New Body. Her wig is Pearl White; it looks like a one-length version of the Waffle.

Hewitt (12/7/03) (on YJ): This Limited Model is the only Hewitt (pronounced "Huey") release. Based on collectors' pages, his eyes are 16 mm. His hair, if not the Boys' Short II, is very similar.

MSD Ken: Ken also has a Limited Model and a One-Off Model in SD size.

      Standard Models

Original Standard Model (release data unknown) (on YJ): This doll comes either semi-assembled (with Zoukeimura Airbrush makeup) or in a completely unassembled kit. He has 16 mm, Gray acrylic eyes and wears the Boys' Short wig, in what appears to be Light Gold.

Pure Skin Body (6/6/04) (on YJ): This Ken comes with the same eyes as the previous version and the Boys' Short wig in Classic Gold. He's one of the first two MSD Standard Models in Pure Skin (the other is MSD Mika).

      Limited Model (12/15/02) (on YJ)

One-Off Model: Tenshi no Sumika (Home of an Angel) Debut (on YJ): "Tenshi no Sumika," which is Volks translates as "Home of an Angel," is the name used by stores that sell only Super Dollfie and Super Dollfie goods. There are currently eleven such stores, ten in Japan and one in Seoul.

Magie: Despite the romanization, this doll's name is pronounced "Maggie."

Standard Model (9/30/01) (on YJ): This doll was one of the first three MSD. Her hair is the MSD Curl in Ivory. Her eyes are Gray; I think they're also 16 mm and HG Glass, but I couldn't confirm that. She originally comes from Volks only as an unassembled kit, so she comes with no makeup, although ones you get from YJ may well be made up (in both senses of the word).

One-Off Models: Tenshi no Suika (Home of an Angel) Debut (on YJ)

Marie (10/19/03) (on YJ): This Standard Model comes only as an unassembled kit. Her eyes are 18 mm, Dark Violet, and acrylic. Her hair is Boys' Short in Camel.

Mario (10/19/03) (on YJ): Also coming only as an unassembled Standard Model, Mario has 18 mm, Hazel, acrylic eyes. His wig may be custom, but it looks to me like Boys' Short II with the ends curled up and out a bit. Volks describes it as Camel, but on comparison to Marie's (which is Camel), I think you'll agree it's darker and redder. My guess is that it's Wine Brown, but that is a guess. Of course, the pictures are of the Mario prototype, and the actual doll could come with Camel; I was not able to find pictures of unaltered Marios on the Web.

Miesya (12/9/01) (on YJ): This doll (whose name is pronounced "Meesha") is one of three fairy MSD models. Available as an unassembled or semi-assembled Standard Model, she has 20 mm, Light Blue glass eyes (probably HG Glass). (The picture has brown, but I've confirmed that they're blue.) Volks describes her Wig as "Sauvage"; it looks like the Waffle (W-08N) to me, and it still looks that way on other sites, so I doubt it's a prototype issue. At least we can agree that the color is Pearl White. Her ears are described in a variety of ways; I'd say downward-turned elf ears.

    MSD Mika

Standard Model (6/6/04) (on YJ): The first female MSD Standard Model in Pure Skin, Mika's eyes are 16 mm acrylic, in Blue. Her wig is One Curl Super Long in Ivory, which is not available separately in MSD size.

      Limited Models

MSD Mika (12/15/02) (on YJ): Her hair is the same as the Standard Model (although the hair framing the face is shorter--it looks like it may be a mere matter of in what direction that hair is brushed). She has Zoukeimura Airbrush makeup. I could confirm nothing about her eyes, but my guess would be that they're 14 mm glass; also, the blue seems deeper than on the standard model.

MSD Mika, Beautiful White (aka 2004 Character Exhibition version) (on YJ): This Mika seems to have the same eyes as the previous Limited Model, but her hair is Straight Braids in Light Brown.

    Myu

Standard Model (9/30/01) (on YJ): This is one of the first three MSD. Again, Volks calls her hair "Sauvage" on her page but calls the style "Waffle" on the wigs page; it's in Ivory.

Myu Sweet Dream (9/27/03) (on YJ): This doll has me very confused. My best guess is that she was originally a Limited Model but that she was then released as a Standard Model unassembled kit. Her eyes appear to be shut, so I didn't wonder that Volks didn't list her as coming with eyes, but collectors' pages give eyes in their profiles (they give various colors, in 18 mm). As a Standard Model, she comes unassembled and without clothing. I don't know if the slip she wears in the pictures came with her as a Limited Model.

    Nursya

Standard Model (12/9/01) (on YJ): The second of the three fairy MSD models, she is available either unassembled or semi-assembled. Nursya has cat ears instead of human ones. Her wig is the MSD Curl in Brown; her eyes are glass, Light Green, 18 mm.

One-Off Model: Kyoto Dolls Party 2 (3/20/04) (on YJ): Nursya gets fuzzy black ears, a paler wig (I think it's Cream, which is of course appropriate for a cat!), and a boy's body.

Sakura (9/30/01) (on YJ): The third of the original three MSD, Sakura is available only in an unassembled kit. She comes with the MSD Straight Long wig in Black; her eyes are Hazel. I couldn't get more information on her eyes than that, but I'd estimate that they're glass and 18 mm.

Shinshiya (12/9/01) (on YJ): The last of the three fairy MSD models, Shinshiya comes either semi-assembled or as an unassembled kit. Volks says her Straight Long wig is brown, but both their picture and others inclines me to Camel. Her eyes come in Light Blue, although the picture on the site is brown. I'd guess, like Miesya, they're glass and 20 mm.

Sundy (8/25/02) (on YJ): I searched desperately for a place where Volks called her "Sandy," but it was no good: "Sundy" it is. She was only released as a Limited Model. Her wig appears to be the Waffle in Ivory, cut to shoulder length. Her makeup is the New Make makeup. I could confirm nothing about her eyes other than that they are glass.

Tsubaki (3/20/04) (on YJ): Even for a Limited Model, Tsubaki is a very unusual MSD. Released at the opening of Tenshi no Sato (lit., "Angel Wings," but Volks translates it as "Village of an Angel"), a store in Kyoto, Tsubaki is an angel; specifically a "kotenshi" (lit., child angel). As such, Tsubaki has a unique, asexual body, made of the Pure Skin resin and wings of white feathers. Tsubaki's hair is an original wig in Light Gold; the eyes are 16 mm, Green, HG Glass.

The Tenshi no Sato store, by the way not only has an exclusive Full-Choice System and other exclusive products, but it is attached to a museum containing all the Limited Model and One-Off Model Super Dollfie ever made. You can bring your lunch and talk with other SD collectors.

    Yuni

      Limited Models

Yuni (11/18/03) (on YJ): Yuni was released as part of the celebration of the opening of Volks' South Korean showroom. I was unable to confirm any of her specifics, but based on the data on her more recent edition, I'd guess her eyes are 14 mm Cadet Blue with White Line and that her hair is the MSD Short Bob in Cream. I'd also guess that she is in Pure Skin.

Sitting Yuni (8/1/04) (on YJ): Her eyes are Cadet Blue with White Line in 14 mm HG glass. Her wig is numbered as W-87N-24, which means the MSD Short Bob, but I could not find a color numbered 24. It's somewhere between Light Gold and Cream. Her body is the new MSD girl Suwarikko Body, which is in the Pure Skin resin.

      One-Off Model: Dolls Party 10 (12/7/03)

Super Dollfies (SDs)

Super Dollfies, unsurprisingly the original size in the Super Dollfie line, are supposed to be nine-year-old children. They are 58 cm (22.75 in) tall. Super Dollfies often have SD13 versions, but as they look vastly different from their SD versions, I shall list them separately. Nonetheless, they can use the same wigs as SD13 dolls.

Note that unlike the SDs of other sizes, the SD size doll usually comes with a nonjointed waist. Apparently it is available as an option; I assume in the Full Choice System.

    Anais

    Aya

Limited Model (11/23/02) (on YJ): A sophisticated young lady out on the town, Aya was released to celebrate the Ginza Tenshi no Sumika opening. She's got 18 mm Light Violet eyes and Zoukeimura makeup, although she has the original female SD body.

One-Off Model: Dolls Party 9 Debut (5/5/03) (on YJ)

Byakuren (3/20/04) (on YJ): Only available as a limited edition, Byakuren is a "Kyotenshi" (a term made up by Volks, by which they seem to mean an angel who lives in Kyoto). This doll shares a special-edition, asexual SD-size New Body with the other Kyotenshi, Kyotenshi, who, like Byakuren, are part of the Tenshi no Sato (Village of an Angel) series. Byakuren has 20mm, Blue with Black Line, HG Glass eyes and an original wig in an original color.

Chi (5/5/02) (on YJ): The main character from CLAMP's Chobits, Chi is one of six anime dolls released by Volks. Chi has 22 mm Brown eyes and the same body as SD Nono, but with Zoukeimura makeup. Naturally her wig is a custom job.

SD Thirteen Volks Original D (5/5/02) (on YJ 1, on YJ 2, on YJ 3): Although most collectors list this doll as an SD13 and 60 cm tall, Volks lists this doll--every time they list her, which is in several places--as an SD. After much searching of the internet and finally seeing her not made up, she definitely has the SD13 "Four Sisters" head, and my guess is that she has a regular SD-size body, hence the ambiguity regarding her status. Almost every collector's site also lists her as "sorceress," which I didn't see anywhere on Volks's sites. She is a limited edition released at the Gothloli Event after Dolls Party 7. She has the New Make makeup, and I've been told that she comes with 18 mm eyes (which is typical with other dolls with the same head) and that she comes with 20 mm eyes (possible: they look larger that those on the other dolls, although that could just be her makeup). She's a Volks Original in contrast to the Gothic & Lolita Collaboration dolls released at the same event.

    SD Ken

Kira: One of the first four Super Dollfie, Kira has come in two Standard Models (I would expect a fourth [New Body] in the not too distant future), as well as two Limited Models. She also has an SD13 version. For all Kira dolls on YJ, check here.

      Standard Models

Old Make (2/28/99) (on YJ): This Kira comes with a wig that doesn't seem to be available separately. It's brown, but more golden in tone than copper, and it's more fluffy than curly. The site calls it "Dark Brown Sauvage," but I'd call it light to medium brown. Her eyes are 22 mm Blue.

New Make (8/25/02) (on YJ): She comes with the same eyes as the Old Make. Her wig Volks still calls "Sauvage," but this one looks like the Waffle to me. The color they describe as Natural Gold, but it seems too coppery for that. Volks mentions on its site that pictures are of prototypes and the color tone of the actual doll may vary, so maybe that's what's going on.

Limited Models: Both of Kira's Limited Models are part of the Gothic & Lolita Collaboration series, in which Volks and Gothic & Lolita clothing designers collaborated to make limited-edition dolls for the Gothloli Event held after Dolls Party 7.

Kyotenshi (10/19/03) (on YJ): Kyotenshi was apparently named before Volks decided the term was to be a type of doll rather than an individual name, for there are two other later dolls, Shiratori, described as Kyotenshi. Like the other Tenshi no Sato dolls, Kyotenshi has an Asexual New Body. The eyes are 18 mm Light Violet; the hair, a One-Length Wave wig in Ivory. Kyotenshi was a Kyoto Doll Party 1 Limited Model.

    Leona: See Reona.

Lihit (12/9/01) (on YJ): This Limited Model is always listed as "Licht" on collectors' sites, so perhaps the packaging does not agree with the Volks site. His eyes are 20 mm glass. The date looks too early even for New Make, so he must have the original male body. His head is F-09 from the Full Choice System, as is that of Reona, another Limited Model released at the same time. The Full Choice System became available that month, so I suspect the two dolls were to demonstrate the range of possibilities even with the same face.

Megu: This doll is one of the core dolls of the Super Dollfie line. One of the first four Super Dollfies, Megu was also in the first group of New Make dolls released and one of the first four SD13 Standard Models.

Standard Models: All these dolls, as well as Megu's Limited Models, come with 22 mm Brown eyes and the Straight wig in Black.

      Limited Models

White-skin, Kimono Edition (4/30/2000) (on YJ): The very first Limited Model Super Dollfie, I would have supposed her to be Old Make, but one collector's site noted that she had the jointed waist that is optional on SD size dolls. She uses the Beautiful White skin color.

Taishou Romance (12/10/2000) (on YJ): Again in traditional dress, Megu wears a floral kimono appropriate for the Taishou period (1912-1926). One site said this edition came with a "partition body" (bunkatsu) body, but I could find no explanation of what that meant.

      One-Off Models

Michael (5/5/02): Based on collector pages, his eyes are 18 mm, although the color varies, of course.

Michele: The name on the package is "Michele," making the gender of the name ambiguous, but the doll is male.

Limited Model (3/20/04) (on YJ): He's got a New Body with Normal proportions and 16mm Green glass eyes.

      One-Off Models

Dolls Party 11, male (click on the second picture from the bottom) (8/1/04) (on YJ): Michele gone Goth! I think the skin tone in the normal one, but that wig has got to be Black rather than Natural.

Dolls Party 11, female (8/1/04) (on YJ): I was not able to find a picture of her other than YJ, but she has a white dress with tapestry-like trim and a bonnet in the same material. She uses, of course, the girls' New Body. Her eyes are Zokeimura Glass, 16 mm, in color 21 (I couldn't find a Volks name for it, but it's a vivid bluish green). Her wig looks like a longer version of the original Michele's. The stats I saw said it was "One-Off Special Order No. 75-27": the "27" means Natural Gold, but I've never seen a wig numbered 75 before.

    SD Mika

Limited Model (8/10/03) (on YJ): Mika has 18 mm Light Violet eyes, a custom wig in Ivory, and a New Body.

One-Off Model (date unknown) (on YJ): I could not locate an event or a date for the release of this doll.

Mimi: She has an SD13 version, in addition to the ones listed here.

Momoko Ryugasaki (6/6/04) (on YJ): A Lolita girl to the core, Momoko is a Limited Model released at the Tokyo Dolls Party 2 After Event. Her wig is custom, but her eyes are 18 mm Cadet Blue with White Line HG Glass. She has a New Body. Her default outfit (and the five optional outfits available separately) are by the designer BABY, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT.

Her optional clothing sets, which should fit any SD-size female body with Normal proportions:

Rose Princess Set: A different white and pink set than the one she comes in.

Whitey New One Piece Set?: I'm not sure of that romanization. The "one piece" refers to the dress; it's a complete all-white outfit.

Elizabeth One Piece Set: Again, the "one piece" refers to the dress. This complete set is in deep red and bright white, rather reminiscent of a candy cane.

Sweet Candy Set: This ensemble is in baby blue and white.

Charlotte Beauvoir (?) Set: I'm guessing that the family name (BOWAARU) is French. A friend who speaks French (after listening to a recitation from me of how the Japanese transliterate) opined that "Beauvoir" might be it, so that's why I supply it. This is a black and white set.

Nana: One of the first four SDs, Nana also comes in an SD13 edition.

      Standard Models

Old Make version (2/28/99) (on YJ): This was one of the first four SDs. Nana came with 22 mm Blue Green eyes and the Long Wave in Light Gold (which looks like a dark gold or light brown to me).

New Make version (8/25/02) (on YJ): She has the same eyes with the new version of the Long Wave in the same color.

New Body version (9/27/03) (on YJ): The only difference in addition to the new body is Nana's eyes: they're the same size, but they are Dark Green.

      Limited Models

Nana by Black Peace Now (5/5/02) (on YJ): This Nana is one of the Gothic & Lolita Collaboration series, in which famous designers of Gothloli clothes for humans made them for SD.

Nana Sweet Dream (3/03) (on YJ): Another in the series of sleepy dolls. I must admit, I think Nana's the sweetest of the lot.

      One-Off Models

Nono: As the wide array of editions of her attests, Nono is probably the single most popular doll in the entire Super Dollfie line. She is often the first of a given kind of doll, and there are three Sweet Dream versions of her alone! She has, of course, an SD13 edition.

      Standard Models

Old Make (1/1/00) (on YJ): Nono has 22 mm Blue eyes and the Long Wave wig in Ivory.

New Make (8/25/02) (on YJ): This Nono, in addition to the new makeup, has the Curl wig in Ivory. Her eyes are the same as the previous edition.

New Body (8/10/03) (on YJ): Nono was the first New Body doll. In addition to that change, this edition comes with Cobalt eyes.

      Limited Models

White-skin Shrine Maiden Nono (8/2000) (on YJ): This is well before the New Bodies, but I was unable to confirm whether this doll uses the Beautiful White resin. It looks to me like Nono is trying to look like Megu. This is the doll to get if you like the miko look.

Snow White Nono (10/2000) (on YJ): I could not find a photo of this doll anywhere, unfortunately. This edition does use the Beautiful White skin color.

Coming-of-Age Day Nono (12/10/2000) (on YJ): In Japan, all people who are to have their twenty-first birthday in the coming year are considered to have come of age on the second Monday of January. Nono dresses in kimono to mark this occasion in her life (despite the doll only supposing to be nine years old! ^_^).

Volks Original "V" (5/5/02) (on YJ): Released at the same time as the Gothloli Collaboration series, this doll was entirely a Volks production (hence the "Volks Original" in her name).

Nono Sweet Dream (8/25/02) (on YJ): Nono once again sets the pace as the very first Sweet Dream doll.

        XMas Edition (12/02) (on YJ)

Nono Sweet Dream (Nostalgic) (9/27/03) (on YJ): Here Nono has a Waffle wig and a teddy bear. Given the date, I suspect this is the first Nono Limited Model to have a New Body (and hence Pure Skin), but I could not confirm that.

Nono Sweet Dream ES (on YJ): A Gothloli Sweet Dream Nono! A catalog exclusive, she uses the Pure Skin resin in Beautiful White, so she must have a New Body.

      One-Off Models

Reona (12/9/01) (on YJ): I agree with all the collectors' pages: Volks almost certainly means "Leona," but I could not find that transliteration for this doll on their site, and I haven't seen her box. Her head, like her twin brother Lihit's, is F-09 from the Full Choice System. Given the date, I'd assume this Limited Model has an original female body. I couldn't confirm, but given that Lihit has 20 mm eyes, I'd guess she does, too.

    Ria

Limited Model (3/03) (on YJ): Ria would make an exceptionally good base if you were trying to create an anime character. From her facial features, to the shape of her head, and the size of her eyes, she's just right for it, especially characters of the "sweet" variety. Hopefully Volks will make her a Standard Model at some point. She comes with 20 mm Dark Violet eyes, and her wig is the Straight Long in Cream.

      One-Off Models

Dolls Party 10 (12/7/03) (on YJ): She's the doll on the right (the other is Rio). She was released at Dolls Party 10.

Dolls Party 11 (click on fifth image from the top) (8/1/04) (on YJ): Have I mentioned that I love this doll? In this edition, her long Cream hair is cut to frame her so very sweet face, making her the loveliest Ria yet. It looks like her eyes have also been changed to Blue Green (which in Volks lingo is a color more blue than green).

Rio: Probably the best Standard Model to start with if you're going for an anime character. She looks a bit sassier than Ria. Hopefully she'll get a New Body soon.

      Standard Models

Old Make (12/10/2000) (on YJ): Her eyes are 22 mm Light Gray, and her wig is the Straight Long. The specs say Brown, which is much darker than what the picture shows, but pictures are the prototypes, which might not exactly matc the for-sale version.

New Make (8/25/02) (on YJ): This edition made changes to both Rio's eyes (24 mm Blue) and her hair (Curl wig in Light Gold).

Limited Model: China Edition (12/10/2000) (on YJ): Given the date, this model must be based of the Old Make version.

      One-Off Models

Ryo: The only male Standard Model in SD size, Ryo makes a good base for anime characters. I've often seen Ryo's head on a female body on YJ, probably because it provides another anime-ish face style.

      Standard Models

Old Make (5/5/02) (on YJ): The original Ryo's eyes are 22 mm Blue Gray (by which Volks means means "gray blue"). The specs page says he comes with an original wig, although it looks just like the Boys' Short to me.

New Body (12/7/03) (on YJ): Ryo's eyes are the same color, but they're 2 mm smaller (20 mm). The wig is an original, in Mixed Gold.

Limited Model: Xmas Edition (12/02) (on YJ)

Sara: Another of the core dolls of the Super Dollfie line, Sara also has an SD13 version.

      Standard Models

Old Make (2/28/99) (on YJ): One of first four SDs, Sara came with 22 mm Violet eyes and the Wave wig in Light Gold (which is usually a much darker color than what is shown in the picture, so perhaps the doll comes with a different one than shown).

New Make (8/25/02) (on YJ): Sara still has the same eyes, but now she has the Curl wig in Ivory.

New Body (6/6/04) (on YJ): Her eyes are the same size, but now they're Light Violet. Her wig is the Long Wave in Ivory.

Limited Model: Sara by Black Peace Now (5/5/02) (on YJ): Another of the Gothic & Lolita Collaboration series

Sasya (6/5/03) (on YJ): This doll was released only as a Limited Model. She has 18 mm Blue eyes and a New Body in Beautiful White. Her hair is definitely Ivory; if the wig isn't the Long Wave, it's a close relative. Originally available only as a Dollybird Mailorder Exclusive, Sashya was later available at Hobby Expo (7/27/03).

Shiratori: This doll was one of the angel dolls released as part of the Tenshi no Sato (Village of an Angel) store debut. Like Byakuren and Kyotenshi, Shiratori is a Kyotenshi and has an Asexual SD New Body. The eyes are 18 mm HG Glass in Light Violet, and the wig, an original one, in Ivory.

    Silvie

Limited Model: Lady Silvie (10/19/03) (on YJ): This lovely lady pirate comes with 20 mm Dark Violet eyes, a New Body, and the Long Wave wig in Pearl White.

One-Off Model: Kyoto Doll Party 2 (3/20/04) (on YJ): She seems to have stolen Captain Cecil's hairstyle for this edition, although I think that's Light Gold she's got.

Yumi Fukuzawa (12/7/03) (on YJ): Also known as "Rosa chinensis en bouton petit soeur," this character from the anime and manga series Maria-sama ga miteru is one of six anime character dolls released by Volks. She is only available as a Limited Model, and of course you can get her "Big Sister," Shoko Ogasawara, too.

Super Dollfie 13s (SD13s)

SD13 dolls are supposed to be thirteen-year-olds, of course. They are only two centimeters taller than SDs (for a total of 60 cm or 23.5 in) and can use the same wigs they do. The Standard Models with the original SD13 body come without clothing; the SD13 New Body Dolls come with a slip and shorts for girls and a T-shirt and shorts for boys.

The female dolls generally have a much more willowy look than their SD counterparts. The original female bodies came in S, M, and L types, by which Volks means small, medium, or large breasts.

Keep in mind that the searches for the SD size dolls have just the doll's name; if you're looking for the SD13 version of an SD doll, you might still want to try the SD search.

Cecil: That's pronounced "Sessil" (that is, the French pronunciation), by the way. He was not the first SD13 male doll nor the second, but he's very popular. He's only available in limited editions.

Chris: One of the first two male SD13 dolls, Chris has seen three Limited Models and one One-Off one. All use the White skin color. (It's generally agreed that Chris and Lucas are the same head, only Chris is in White and Lucas in Flesh. I couldn't confirm that at Volks, but it looks right to me.)

Limited Models: It looks like these Models always come with 16 mm Green Blue eyes, although I could only confirm that in one case.

Chris (aka "Chris 1st") (5/5/02) (on YJ): This was released at Dorupa 7, at which the first male Standard Models were released. It's probably not coincidental that May 5 happens to be Boys' Day. His wig looks to be original, in Ivory.

Chris at Montparnasse (aka "Chris 2nd") (12/15/02) (on YJ): This release was at Dolls Party 8, along with Lucas at Picadilly Circus. Also no specs on this one, but the hair color is almost certainly Camel, and the wig very similar to Boys' Short III.

Hiroshima Showroom Limited Edition (aka "Chris 3rd") (6/03) (on YJ): As the name suggests, this edition was available only at Volks's Hiroshima showroom. Chris's eyes are 16 mm Green Blue (which is more green than blue). His Camel wig is an original, but it looks like they started with the Boys' Short II.

One-Off Model: Tokyo Dolls Party 2 (6/6/04) (on YJ)

Cyndy: This doll is a lovely Gothloli girl, in two very different ways.

Limited Model (3/20/2004) (on YJ): This Cyndy has 20 mm Cadet Blue with White Line glass eyes, an SD 13 New Body, and a Princess Cut wig in Natural. She was released at Kyoto Dolls Party 2.

One-Off Model: Tokyo Dolls Party 2 (6/6/04) (on YJ): Here Cyndy sports a short wispy white wig, among other changes. She was released at Tokyo Dolls Party 2.

Full Choice Head F-13 (6/6/04) (on YJ): This One-Off Model is an unusual doll: she has an F-13 (that is, SD Mimi) head, but she has it on an SD13 New Body. Her skin is White. Note that this does not make her SD13 Mimi, who has a different head than her SD edition. I couldn't find the specs for the eyes or the wig, but I'd guess the eyes are 22 mm (same size as the SD Mimi default, although clearly not her color). The wig looks to be the Vertical Roll Long, either in Ivory or Mix Ivory.

Full Choice Head F-16: Volks has created two One-Off Models putting the F-16 head on the SD13 boy body.

Tokyo Dolls Party 2 (6/6/04) (on YJ): This One-Off has the F-16 head from the Full Choice System on the SD13 boy New Body, in the very pink Sunlight skin color. I couldn't find the specs for the eyes or the wig.

Dolls Party 11 (click on third image from the top) (8/1/04) (on YJ): Assumably this doll uses the boy SD13 New Body as well, although I couldn't find any specs.

Full Choice Head F-17 (click on the bottom picture) (8/1/04) (on YJ): This One-Off Model released at Dolls Party 11 has the boy SD13 New Body; the resin is in the Sunlight color. The wig looks to be the same as the one on the F-16 Tokyo Dolls Party 2 One-Off Model, although I could get no specs on this one either.

Isao Nanjou (8/1/04) (on YJ): Released at Dolls Party 11, this doll is another character from the anime and manga series Tokyo Shounen Monogatari and the latest SD13 Limited Model. His eyes, 18 mm Rosewood with Black Line HG glass, were made just for him, as is his wig, which looks to be Cream with Natural roots. His body is an SD13 New Body, with Long legs--the thighs and the shins are of different proportions: the thighs are L-01 and the lower legs L-02, which I believe means that the lower legs are even longer compared to their norm than the thighs are, although I could not confirm that. For what it's worth, I think this is the best of the dolls from this series, and I expect him to become even more popular than the Shiro Tachibana doll.

Kai (11/18/03) on YJ): Supposed to be a "devilish boy" with "mysterious eyes," Kai was released as part of the opening celebration for the South Korea showroom. He uses the Beautiful White skin color. I'm informed that he has an Old Body rather than the new one. I could confirm nothing else about his specifics.

Kira (12/9/01) (on YJ): One of first four SD13 Standard Models, just as she was one of the first SD Standard Models. The specs page calls her wig a "Platinum Blonde Sauvage," but it looks like an Ivory Waffle to me. From the information on collectors' pages, I'd say that she has the M body and 18 mm eyes, but I was unable to confirm that at Volks. Kira's eye color is Blue Green (much more blue than green, if the pictures are accurate).

Lucas: The name has the French pronunciation. Lucas is one of the first two male SD13 and probably the most popular. I'm surprised there isn't a Standard Model of him, but so far it's all Limited Models and One-Offs.

Madoka: Based on what I saw on collectors' sites, I would say that Madoka comes with 18 mm Goldenrod HG glass eyes and in Pure Skin (and so has a New Body); I saw one collector's page that said that although Madoka's eyes are 18 mm, the iris is actually the size of a 20 mm eye. The wigs look Black rather than Natural to me. I could confirm none of this information at Volks. Strangely, to me at least, the vast majority of collectors whose sites I visited had put Madoka's head on a male body. Both her Limited Models were released at Dolls Party 10.

      Limited Models

One-Off Model: Dolls Party 11 (click on third image from the top) (8/1/04) (on YJ): It looks to me like she's got the same eyes as before and the same wig as her European-Style Limited Model.

Megu (12/9/01) (on YJ): One of the first four SD13 models, Megu 13 is available only as a Standard Model with the original SD13 L type body. Her eyes are Dark Blue; per collectors' sites, they're 18 mm. Volks calls her wig the "Straight Long," although it looks like One-Length Super Long reduced to a merely "Long" length to me, and I'd say the color is Natural (Volks doesn't say).

    Mimi

Standard Model (12/7/03) (on YJ): Her eyes are 18 mm Green Gray (that is, gray green). Her wig is now Classic Gold, and it's long--it's pretty much the One Curl, only it goes down to her waist and has bangs. Volks calls it the "Sosu Curl." She's the first doll with the SD13 female New Body.

One-Off Model: Kyoto Dolls Party 2 (3/20/04) (on YJ)

Nana (12/9/01) (on YJ): Another of the first four SD13 dolls, Nana has the L type body and Green Blue (more green than blue) eyes. Per collectors' pages, her default eyes are 18 mm. Of her wig, Volks says only "Dark Blonde"; I'd say it's Curl One-Length Long in Natural Gold or Light Gold.

Nono (2/02) (on YJ): Nono is the only Standard SD13 dolls to come with the S type body. Volks calls her wig a "Platinum Blonde Wave"; it looks to me like it's an Ivory One Curl Super Long reduced to a merely Long length. It certainly does not look like what they call the Wave on SD dolls. Her eyes are Blue; per collectors' pages, they're 20 mm.

Sara (12/9/01) (on YJ): The last of the first four SD13 dolls, Sara has an M type body. According to collectors, her eyes are 18 mm; Volks only says that they're Light Blue. Volks Describes her wig as a "Light Blonde Curl," but in most pictures it looks exactly like an Ivory Curl One-Length to me. In some pictures it looks like they've trimmed some of the hair to cup her face more. I'm not sure which is her actual wig and which is the prototype.

Shiro Tachibana: Possibly the hottest Super Dollfie of any size at the time this article was written. Despite the similarity of title with this doll's series, Shiro is not a character from the anime and mangaTokyo Shounen Monogatari (Tokyo Boy Story).

Limited Model (5/5/03) (on YJ): According to collectors, this release did have a New Body. They all agree that his eyes are 18 mm, although most seem to prefer to replace the default eyes with 18/9 mm ones. Some said they were HG glass, some said they were Zokeimura glass. Clearly, the eyes are lavender, but I could not find the Volks name for the color.

      One-Off Models

Shoko Ogasawara (12/7/03) (on YJ): Also known as Rosa chinensis of the anime and manga series Maria-sama ga miteru, Shoko is one of six Volks anime dolls. I couldn't get stats on her, unfortunately. Her "little sister," Yumi Fukuzawa, was also released.

Show: Show (often written "Syo" and pronounced like the English word "show") is the only male Standard SD13 doll.

      Standard Models

Original body (5/5/02) (on YJ): My apologies, I couldn't find a picture.

New Body (8/10/03) (on YJ): This edition has Green eyes; based on collectors' pages, they're 20 mm. His wig is Mix Gold; if it's not Boys' Short III, it's awfully close.

      One-Off Models

Dolls Party 11 (click on second image down) (8/1/04) (on YJ): Show's head on an SD girl's body! He does make a rather sweet girl, and Volks probably decided to do this because so many collectors were doing it already.

Tohya (6/6/04) (on YJ): A Limited Model released at Tokyo Dolls Party 2, Tohya is an elegant young man in black Chinese fashions. He has Cadet Blue with White Line 16 mm HG glass eyes but apparently they aren't sufficient because he wears glasses. His wig is listed as an original in "Brown Mesh," but it looks very similar to the Boys' Short II in Natural to me. He has the male SD New Body with Long legs.

    Tsukasa Konoe

Limited Model (12/7/03) (on YJ): Also in the Tokyo Shounen Monogatari (Tokyo Boy Story) doll series, Tsukasa was released at Dolls Party 10. Based on collectors' pages, his eyes are 18 mm HG glass in Ash Green. Given the date of the release, I think you can assume that he has a New Body. His wig looks custom to me, in Natural.

One-Off Model: Kyoto Dolls Party 2 (3/20/04) (on YJ): This is the doll on the right, with the two-tone wig.

And there you have it! With all these to start from and the methods for changing them in the first article, you should be able to create the doll you always dreamed of having.

Happy shopping to all and see you next month!
