Disney Collectibles 1: Winnie-the-Pooh Mini Bean Bag Plushes, Part 4

Bears of a Different Color and Other Animals

If you haven't read part 1 of this article, at least hit the introduction to the descriptions. There is some necessary information, such as definitions of terms, which I don't repeat here. Also don't forget to hit the general searches section; it's often the only way to find a specific Pooh.

This series of articles is designed to assist collectors in distinguishing similar or similarly named Pooh mini bean bag plushes from around the globe from those released exclusively in Asia. The first article dealt with all Poohs released in Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as Japanese Poohs taking on human roles; the second, with holiday and special event Poohs released in Japan; and the third, Japan-release Poohs with food, flower, and other nonanimal themes.

This month, in the final installment, Pooh dresses as animals other than himself. If you like an animal, whether fanciful or mundane, odds are that the Japanese have dressed Pooh as it. If you're looking, however, for animals associated with either the Western zodiac, the Eastern calendar cycle, or any holiday, they're found in the special occasions article.

Little Stars Animal Series: I don't know the official names of these series, but I know that these releases were considered to be grouped as shown below.

July 2003: Most of these are animals that his friends are, although not his friends themselves (maybe the elephant sneaks in under the importance of Heffalumps in the Hundred Acre Wood).

Donkey Pooh (Jul 2003): Pooh is a donkey of very pale brown with a white muzzle. His mane seems to be a little more golden than the rest of him (I couldn't find a picture from behind, so I only got a glimpse over his head). He holds a large orange carrot with greens at the top. The only other Donkey Pooh I've seen is Pooh dressed as Eeyore.

Elephant Pooh: The 2003 Elephant Pooh is pale blue. The insides of his ears and the bandana around his neck are of pink gingham. He also has two pink toenails on his hands and feet, although the bottoms of those feet are the same pale blue as the rest of him. The keychain is the same. See below for an earlier Japanese LS Elephant Pooh.

Pig Pooh: I've also seen this one as "Piglet Pooh," but that doesn't mean he's dressed as his best friend. Pooh is dressed as a bright pink big with a white end to his snout, pale pink insides to his ears, and white hooves on the ends of his hands and feet. He wears a navy blue bandana with small white hearts on it and has slung across himself the strap of a small pouch that is in the shape of a pig's head. The dangle version is exactly alike.

Tiger Pooh: Also called "Bengal Tiger Pooh," this Pooh wears an orange tiger suit with brown stripes. There's a tuft of white fur on the chest and white cheek tufts as well. In front of himself, Pooh holds a ball with red, white, and blue sections (like those seen on a beach ball).

    December 2003

Buffalo Pooh: No, this is not the American bison; this is the Asian animal from which its popular name comes. Pooh is dressed in a suit of shiny dark gray velour. The buffalo's nose is black, and on Pooh's chest, on top of his head, and at the end of his long thin tail are patches of long pale yellow fur. The bottom fo the patch of fur on his chest is bordered by a U-shaped patch of black fur.The insides of his ears also have tufts of the pale fur; otherwise, they're purple. His horns are tan, and there is a little blue bird sitting on his right arm.

Hamster Pooh: Pooh makes a particularly cute hamster. He's a fluffy pale tan with pink hands and a tiny pink tail. He holds a sunflower seed in his paws and has the head of a sunflower slung across him on a green cord, as if the sunflower were a purse. He's looking off to his right rather than straight on. If there's another Hamster Pooh, I've missed it.

Kangaroo Pooh: Pooh is a kangaroo of warm red brown (you know--Roo-colored) and carries an orange joey in his front pocket. The dangle is the same. The Australian release was a pale tan all over, including the insides of his ears (the Japanese toy's are pink) and his joey. He is also easily distinguished from the Halloween Pooh as Kangaroo: he's not carrying a treat bag, and his nose isn't covered by a fake one.

Koala Pooh: Pooh dresses as Australia's most beloved animal. He has chosen to be a pale blue koala, with pink insides to his ears and a patch of pink fur on his chest. In his hands he holds a baby koala of a paler shade of blue, also with a pink patch on its chest. He has a short round tail in the back that is blue on top and pink underneath. The Australian Koala Pooh of 2001 was a pearly gray and had extremely fuzzy white insides to his ears. He also had real koala feet (that is, with an opposable toe) on his feet, while the Japanese koala just has regular LS Pooh feet. The Australia koala doesn't hold anything.

Jan-Jun 2004: Pooh appeared as a different animal each month of the first six of 2004. They all seem to be pet animals, but Disney's site does not specify them as such. The first three were dogs and the second three cats.

Chihuahua Pooh (Jan 2004): I am not sure why a Chihuahua requires a white cloth hairband with brown leopard spots and caps for his ears, but nonetheless, Chihuahua Pooh has one. It is removable. In fact, the keychain version holds the band rather than wearing it. Underneath it, Pooh is dressed as a pure white Chihuahua with fluffy white cheek tufts, a feathery tail, and a pretty pink bandana.

Toy Poodle Pooh (Feb 2004): Pooh is dressed as a fluffy pale tan poodle; the insides of the dog's ears are peach rather than pink. His fur is in what the groomers call a "puppy cut"; that is, it is the same length all over. Around his neck is a white bandana with a pattern of small flowers in various shades of pink. There seems to be a white hair band around his head, but with (for some reason) large white rabbit ears the insides of which are made of the same white cloth with pink flowers as the cloth around his neck. Perhaps this is what is surprising the dangle version so much that his ears are nearly standing up; he doesn't seem to have the headband.

Dachshund Pooh (Mar 2004): Given Pooh's stoutness, a dachshund was probably not a good choice of breed. Not that this release isn't a cutie, but he just looks like a generic black dog with large floppy ears. The insides of the ears are white, and he wears a bright red bandana. Apparently he also requires a headband, for Pooh wears a big fluffy golden brown one, making it look like he's wearing a lion's mane. The keychain version doesn't have the headband; instead Pooh wears a purse of the same color. Otherwise the keychain is identical.

Siamese Cat Pooh (Apr 2004): Well . . . he doesn't look like a Siamese cat to me. He's pale gray all over (including his points, although I couldn't see his tail), with black claws on his forepaws and aqua insides to his ears. He wears a yellow ribbon around his neck and holds an aqua cat toy (looks rather like a duster with a jingle bell attached close to the tip). The keychain does look more like a Siamese cat: he doesn't have the toy, the claws, orthe ribbon (he's got a white pompom at his throat instead), but he is a slightly darker pale gray on his arms, legs, and the cat's muzzle. I would assume his tail is the same gray, but I couldn't see it from the angle of the picture.

American Shorthair Cat Pooh (May 2004): This cat's stripes are very like a zebra's. The MBBP has a cat toy much like the Siamese cat's only the Shorthair's is white with a green fluffy near the tip. The MBBP also wears an emerald green satin ribbon around his neck. The keychain doesn't have the ribbon, but he is holding a goldfish in both paws.

White Persian Pooh (June 2004): This cat is fluffier than average, but I would've expected more length to the fur in a Persian. Pooh is a fluffy white cat with a gray muzzle and a yellow pom-pom for a nose. He holds yet another cat toy, this one yellow with a red thing (might be a ladybug) near the tip. His bow is brilliant fuschia satin. The dangle is similar, but it has no bow and holds a yellow bird with orange wings, bill, and eyes.

    March 2004

Alligator Pooh: Pooh is dressed as an iridescent green alligator with turquoise claws and a turquoise ridge down his back. His stomach is a pale matte green, with horizontal ridges. The dangle is identical.

Dolphin Pooh: Pooh is a shiny fuchsia dolphin, complete with long tail and dorsal fin. His tummy is a paler pink, and he seems to have blue flowers at his throat. The keychain is the same.

Hippo Pooh: For some reason, Pooh's gray hippo suit has bright yellow (less orange than Pooh yellow) feet, although although the front paws are gray. On his right paw perches a red bird with orange wings, an orange bill, and yellow plumage on the head and tail. Around Pooh's neck is a ring of strips of iridescent green vegetation, rather reminiscent of a hula skirt. The dangle is the same except there is no bird.

Bees: Perhaps this is how Pooh plans to have continuing access to all that hunny! Just in case the bees suspect something with one costume, he's supplied himself with several, two from Japan.

LS Bee Pooh (Apr 2002): I've also seen this called "Bumblebee Pooh." To a nonbee, this is clearly a costume: Pooh wears his red shirt beneath this one and all his limbs are bare. The body has two black stripes and two pale yellow stripes, black suspenders with yellow buttons, and a black hood. The hood allows Pooh's ears to stick out and has black antennae topped with yellow pom-poms. On the back is a pair of white iridescent bee wings. In 1998 two nonexclusive Poohs were released: one a Valentine's release in which Pooh as red hearts on the top of his antennae and the other has rather floppy antennae and "Pooh" in yellow on his top black strip. Other than that and their being regular Poohs, these two look very much like the Japanese LS Bee Pooh. The American Bee Pooh of 2001 has black limbs, a seam up the middle of his tummy (so his strips don't always meet correctly), much smaller yellow tips to his antennae (can't tell if they're pom-poms), and yellow iridescent bee wings. The UK Buzzing Bee Pooh of later that year is identical to the American one, but if you push on his tummy, he makes a buzzing sound. WDW released a Bee Pooh for Halloween 2000, but that's a brown and yellow bee suit that only comes up to Pooh's waist; he has purple flowers with a yellow pom-pom center at the top of his antennae; his suspenders are pink with blue buttons; it looks like his green iridescent wings may be leaves; he's carrying an orange treat bag; and his stinger is a bathroom plunger! I hope he uses that one just for Halloween because I doubt it would fool even bees!

LS Honeybee Pooh (Mar 2003): I've also seen this called "Spring Bee Pooh" and "Flower Bee Pooh." This bee suit is similar to his first, although this time it's in shades of yellow and brown, just like honeybees. The antennae are doubtless were the "Spring" notion comes from: the antennae are black but have at their tips purple felt flowers with yellow felt centers. In his right arm, Pooh holds a flat, tan hunny pot with pale yellow hunny oozing from it. His left paw is in his mouth, doubtless having just helped himself to a smackerel of the hunny!

LS Blue Bird Pooh (Apr 2000): See the penguin Poohs.

Little Stars bug series (Jul 2003): Pooh dresses as three of the world's favorite insects.

Butterfly Pooh: Pooh goes with a pink theme for his butterfly. His body is deep pink with fine yellow horizontal lines; his hood is a very pale pink; and his arms and the stuffed band around the face of his hood are a slightly brighter pink. His legs are bare. He has black antennae that have pink stars on top and his ears stick out just behind the band and under the antennae. Around his neck is a yellow circular collar with points all around. He holds in his hands a yellow flower with two green leaves, a pink center, and an orange butterfly sitting on its center. The dangle is the same except that its flower lacks a butterfly. I couldn't find a picture with a rear view of this bean, so I don't know what his wings look like. I can see just enough to know they're pink; my guess would be at least shiny and possibly iridescent pink.

Dragonfly Pooh: Pooh's future's so bright he's got to wear shades! His dragonfly suit, which has black and lime green horizontal stripes on the body and a set of shiny pale blue dragonfly wings, comes complete with a set of yellow sunglasses with silver lenses and a red cord to keep them around his neck if they fall off. His arms are also covered in the lime green material, although his legs are bare. His hood and its stuffed band are of lime green, too, and the hood has black antennae topped with lime green hearts. His ears stick out of his hood. Around his neck he has a lime green felt collar that has points all the way around. The keychain is the only one of this series to be completely identical to the MBBP. There was a UK Easter Dragonfly in 2001, but that release was in baby blue and pink, not to mention being a regular bear.

Ladybug Pooh: Pooh makes a quite sweet ladybug. His body is black, his arms a warm brown, and his legs bare. His hood and its stuffed band are also black; black antennae topped by yellow hearts are just behind the band and above Pooh's own ears. Around his neck is a scalloped-edge red felt collar. He holds in his hands a four-leafed clover, with two pale green leaves (top and bottom) and two darker green leaves (left and right). On one of the darker green leaves, right next to Pooh's left paw is a ladybug. On the back, Pooh has the two bright red, black-spotted casings of a ladybug, split as if he's ready to take flight. Each wing cover has five black spots. The keychain is identical but for the ladybug on the clover, which is absent.

Bunnies: See "Rabbits" and "Easter."

Butterflies: See the Easter releases.

Cats: Don't miss the 2004 cats and the Halloween black cat, too. The great cats can be found under their own names.

    Lucky Cats Poohs

Summer 2000: Perhaps these weren't beans because I found them on only one site. They look, however, like the Little Stars Poohs. They are clearly not the Lucky Cat Poohs of the following year nor the American ones of 2002: the blue and white cats are posed differently (the red one does look, as far as I can tell, exactly like the later Japanese cat). There were at least a red, a blue, and a white one. They are all sitting on red cushions with a pink cherry blossom pattern. The red Lucky Cat is wearing a blue vest and a collar (maybe white?) with a jingle bell on it and has pink insides to his ears. He is beckoning with his left paw and holding a gold plaque diagonally across himself with his right. On the blue and white cats, the vests, collars, and insides of their ears are all red. The blue Lucky Cat beckons with both paws (possibly because what he is promising is popularity) and the white one with his right. The blue cat has his plaque propped up against his tummy and standing straight up and down; the white cat holds his plaque with his right hand. Below shows what each cat has on his plaque.

2001: There were five of these: red, blue, white, yellow, and black. They all have their left paw raised, just like the American cats of 2002. In fact, I can see only one difference: the custions they're sitting on. The Japanese cats have cushions just like the Japanese cats of 2000, but the Americans have a string design on theirs. The information for the plaques of the black and yellow cats are below; the other three cats are the same as the 2000 release.

Chicks: These all seem to be Easter releases.

Cows: There have been at least four (five, if the report of a separate Singapore release is correct) Cow Poohs, two of which are Japanese.

LS Cow Pooh (Apr 2000): This is one of the first Little Star releases and there was a hand puppet of exactly the same style released two months later. The differences between it and the American and the UK Cow Poohs are subtle indeed, all three of them being white cows with black spots. First, Pooh's nose (not the cow's) is embroidered on the Western toys while the Japanese one has a shiny plastic nose. The British cow has a pink nose and the cow suit's sleeves only come halfway down Pooh's arms; both the US and the Japanese cows have white noses and their hands are hidden beneath the black-and-white material. The Japanese cow's nose is much more substantial than the American's: it is stuffed and sticks out over his forehead a bit, rather like the brim of a baseball cap. The American cow's nose lays fairly flat on Pooh's head and the horns are white (the Japanese and UK cows have tan horns). Also, the American Pooh's arms are quite floppy even compared to the British Pooh's and much more so than the Japanese Pooh's.

LS Cow Pooh (Jan 2001): This is pretty much the previous Japanese Cow Pooh with a red collar and a cow bell on him. The cow's ears are larger and I think the nose may be, too.

Dogs: Don't forget to check out the three dogs from early 2004.

LS Dog Pooh (Jan 2001): This is a rerelease of the Hong Kong Pooh as Dog.

LS Dalmatian Pooh (Jan 2001): This Dalmatian doesn't seem to have much in the way of spots, but he may be affiliated with the Disney film 102 Dalmations. Unusually for an Asian release, this Pooh doesn't have the animal's face on the costume above his own. Pooh has black ears and is white everywhere else that I can see (couldn't find a picture of the back of this toy). He wears a red collar with a blue tag that has a scalloped nonmetallic gold edge.

LS Pink Poodle Pooh (May 2002): Pooh's pink poodle suit sports the classic poodle cut, and it is pink plush where the poodle's fur is short (legs, feet, stomach, face) and pink wool where it is long (on top of ears, back, wrists, top of head). Around his neck on a white cord hangs a stuffed white bone that has "POOH" on it in red. The dangle is identical.

LS Bulldog Pooh (May 2003): I've also seen this called "French Bulldog Pooh" and "French Dog Pooh." Certainly the ears of this dog seem more of the French than the English bulldog. Mostly white, this bulldog has a muzzle, ears, and a stripe up his face of a dark color; in some pictures it looks black, but in some dark chocolate brown. The insides of the dog's ears are pink, and Pooh wears a red gingham bandana. The keychain looks the same.

Dragons (Dec 1999 and Jun 2000): All four of the Japanese dragon Poohs were released in 2000, the Year of the Dragon. All four are not quite the Little Stars style Poohs, but their grins are all closed. They came in blue, white, pink, and red. The red one was the Year of the Dragon Pooh. The blue, white, and pink ones are just dragons and do not have the date on them. They were released in June.

LS Elephant Pooh (Aug 2001): Unfortunately the only pictures I could find of this release were rather small. His suit is a light bluish gray; the bottoms of his feet and the insides of his ears are pale pink. There is something on his front: on his tummy, he has a red circle that looks like it may be suspended from a bandana-ish affair around his neck. It looks like there is a green triangle hanging from around his neck with the red circle at the point. Another LS Elephant Pooh was released in July 2003.

LS Giraffe Pooh (Apr 2000): This one is easy: he's the only Pooh dressed as a giraffe. Well, the only bean so dressed; there was a hand puppet of the same style released in June 2000.

Leopards: The strangest leopard of them all, the Leopard Bat Pooh, can be found among the Halloween releases.

LS Lion Pooh (Apr 2000): Pooh is a tawny gold lion with a white face and a short fluffy mane. There was a hand puppet made in the same style later that year. The UK's Lion Pooh is very similar, but the sleeves of Pooh's lion costume only come halfway down his arm. Also Pooh himself isn't as yellow as the LS version and has an embroidered rather than a plastic nose. The LS Leo Pooh from 2001 has a superficial resemblance, but among other things, he's holding a lion in his hands. The US Leo Pooh doesn't look much like this one at all: he's a pale yellow in his body and his mane is made of loops of yarn.

LS Monkey Pooh (Feb 2001): This was the second of the "Disney Fan" Poohs: mini bean bag plush designs created by fans and selected by Disney for production. This one has Pooh dressed as a chocolate brown monkey.with an oval pink patch on his tummy. He is easily distinguishable from the Japanese Year of the Monkey Poohs: he does not have a date on him, the darkest of them is only a golden brown, and his face replaces that of the monkey rather than the monkeys' faces sitting on top of his, as they do in the Saru Toshi Poohs. The American Year of the Monkey Pooh is also clearly different; for starters, he is also a much paler brown. Also, Pooh's ears stick out of the costume above the monkey's ears, which are much larger than the Disney Fan Monkey. The oval on the US Monkey is also much bigger and tan rather than pink, and he has an approximation of the Chinese character for "monkey" stitched to his left foot.

Pandas

LS Panda Pooh: You've got to look carefully to distinguish this Pooh from the American Dress Up Pooh Panda of 2001: the US Pooh's hood fits his head more loosely and the entire front of his body is white, whereas the Japanese Pooh has a strip of black across the front at the point where his arms connect. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the Dress Up Panda and the American Panda Pooh released later that same year is that the latter cannot stand up unaided. The British Panda is much easier: his panda suit only halfway covers his limbs.

LF Panda Pooh (Jul 2002): This panda suit seems to be made of fine terry cloth and the Pooh has the longer, floppier limbs seen on Western style Poohs. On the panda's left foot is sewn a yellow star patch. His detachable shoulder strap is red with "POOH" stamped along it in white.

Penguins: There have been five penguin Poohs, four of them Japanese.

LS Blue Penguin Pooh (Apr 2000): There is a great deal of disagreement over the name of this Pooh. Some say he is a penguin, but others call him "Blue Bird Pooh." With some reservations, I have put him among the penguins. The similarity of the pattern among these beans seems to exact to be accidental. The bean and the keychain are identical for this set. Pooh is wearing a pale blue penguin suit. He has wings instead of arms, and his feet are bright orange and have three toes. His tummy is white and there are large white patches around the bird's tiny black eyes. The UK Penguin Pooh of August 2000 has a very similar head, but his major color is black rather than blue and the entire front of his body is white. Also, rather than having his arms and feet replaced by the penguin's, the British Pooh's are clearly part of a costume: lift his arm, and you'll see that the wing is secured to Pooh's arm with a strap.

LS Penguin Pooh (Jun 2002): He most closely resembles the LS Blue Penguin Pooh, having the same general body pattern, including the white patches around the penguin's eyes. He is, however, a darker shade of blue, furrier all over, and carrying an ice cream cone in his right wing (from the color, I'd guess coffee ice cream). His feet are pale yellow and the broad triangles to be expected of a penguin's webbed feet and more of his tummy is white than is the Blue Penguin's. The dangle version looks the same, only that Pooh doesn't carry an ice cream cone. The UK Penguin Pooh is again very similar head, but in addition to the same differences as with the Blue Penguin, he's less fluffy than this one, and his bill and feet are orange.

LF Penguin Pooh (Jul 2002): This is looks a great deal like the Blue Penguin, being the same basic pattern and very nearly the same shade of blue, but the material looks to be a fine terry cloth. His limbs are more of the Western style, although the rest of him looks Asian. He has a blue fish embroidered to the bottom of his left foot (his feet being a yellow that borders on tan). His shoulder strap is about the same color as his feet and has "POOH" stamped along it in a color so nearly the same (just a bit darker) that it's barely distinguishable.

LS Pink Penguin Pooh (Jun 2003): This toy most resembles the Japanese Penguin Pooh of a year earlier; the body pattern and fluffiness are the same, but of course, wherever that one was blue, this one is pink. The Pink Penguin also has red and yellow fluffy tufts over its eyes. The keychain version is identical.

LS Polar Bear Pooh (Apr 2000): Pooh as the king of the North! Pooh's bear suit is a very fluffy white, with three-toed black pads on the bottom of his feet. There are also black lines to show the separations between his fingers. The dangle is the same. There was a later American Polar Bear Pooh, but he had an open mouth and three-toed gray pads on his hands as well as his feet. He was also a little less fluffy than the Japanese release.

Rabbits: Pooh loves dressing up as rabbits, and he has done so in many colors in every country of the world. Here's the list, except for the Year of the Rabbit and the unquestionably Easter releases.

LS Bunny Pooh (Apr 2000): This is sometimes labeled "White Bunny Pooh." What distinguishes this Pooh from the other white rabbit Poohs is that he is completely white except for the insides of his ears, which overlap a little, but not completely, on the very top of his head, and he has regular white fur (which distinguishes him from the white version of the Mar 2001 Easter Bunny Pooh). He also has an Asian style face and body. There was a hand puppet of exactly this design released in June 2000.

Lucky Rabbit Pooh (Mar 2001): There are two of these, a blue and a pink. The pink has fur of a very pale shade of pink, but is a darker pink on the insides of its ears and its nose. Pooh's vest and cushion are of a similarly dark pink. The "blue" one is actually white, the "blue" referring to the insides of the bunny's ears, its nose, the vest Pooh's wearing, and the cushion he's sitting on. Both colors of this rabbit Pooh actually have the hind legs of a rabbit rather than Pooh's just being the appropriate color, and they're holding up their right paws in a beckoning gesture (often mistaken by Westerners for a begging gesture). Each has a jingle bell around his neck and holds in front of himself with his left paw an oval plaque that has "Better Fortune in 2001" in Japanese (Kaiun 2001): äJâ^ÇQÇOÇOÇP

LS Usakko Pooh (Nov 2001): The name of this one is a pun: "ko," depending upon how it is written, can mean something lovely, or it can mean a baby, human or animal. Naturally Disney wrote it in kana, so we couldn't be sure which was meant, but either usage is appropriate here, for the albino baby rabbit Pooh is holding up to touch noses with is undeniably lovely. This is the light-colored, rosy-cheeked Pooh seen most notably in the Birthstone Collection; he's wearing a red shirt much like his favorite, but this one has a collar but no "POOH." Pooh sits on a pink cushion with white and blue cherry blossoms (yeah, I've never seen a blue cherry blossom either), and has a pale pink and a darker pink cherry blossom by his left ear. The dangle is the same without the cushion. The buruburu version is particularly sweet: Pooh is down on the ground with the bunny, and when you pull them apart, they crawl together.

LF Bunny Pooh (Jul 2002): This pink bunny suit seems to be made of a fine terry cloth and is pink all over, only getting a little paler on the tummy and inside the ears. His limbs are long and floppy, but other than that he is of a fairly Asian design. On the bottom of his left foot is embroidered a carrot. His detachable shoulder strap is pink with "POOH" stamped along it in baby blue.

LF Winter Bunny Pooh (Nov 2002): Unlike the earlier Little Friend Bunny, the Winter Bunny seems to be made out of fleece rather than terry cloth, but the body plan is the very same. He's fine raspberry pink with a paler pink on his tummy and inside his ears. What makes this a winter rabbit is the fluffy white muffler around his neck, the forward tail of which has a snowflake attached to it, as does his left ear. There is a snowflake embroidered in white on the bottom of his left foot.

Raccoons

LS Raccoon Pooh (Jan 2002): Pooh is dressed as everyone's favorite nocturnal bandit, although this one's mask is chocolate brown rather than black, as are the rings on his tail. The main color of the raccoon is a paler but still not light brown. Pooh holds a shiny red apple, too. The US Raccoon of Nov 2001 was in shades of gray.

LS Pink Raccoon (Mar 2003): This time Pooh does the raccoon thing in shades of pink. Most of his body is a pale pink, but the raccoon's mask and all of its tail are a darker violet pink. Pooh's claws are also violet pink and he holds a strawberry.

LS Seal Pooh (Aug 2001): Pooh takes the form of a baby harp seal. His arms are completely encased in white fur, but his legs are completely bare. The harp seal's muzzle has some black flecks on it, and his tail extends back behind Pooh. There is another Pooh dressed as a baby harp seal, but it was not a Little Stars style Pooh (and the seal was less fluffy, too).

LS Sea Otter Pooh (Dec 2001): Pooh is dressed in thick brown fur, and his otter suit has a fuzzy white muzzle with a very prominent black nose. Just in case he should be mistaken for one of the lesser weasels, he is holding a white scallop shell. I haven't seen any other otter releases.

Sheep: The Year of the Sheep Pooh is found among the Eto Poohs. You probably should also check the Easter releases.

LS Lamb Pooh (Apr 2000): Pooh is dressed as a woolly lamb with a pink face. His wool covers his hands as well as his feet. The LS Lamb Pooh released in the US (Mar 2001) is similar, but his face entirely replaces the lamb's face, he's a regular Pooh, and the lamb has much bigger ears. I'm not sure how these two differ from the WDW release of June 2002.

LS Knitting Sheep Pooh (Oct 2003): I have heard this one called "Lamb Pooh." Pooh has two tan knitting needles (which he knows to hold points up rather than points down, so he must be a real knitter!). This time Pooh's lamb suit has its feet, ears and face in chocolate brown (the insides of his ears are still pink) and just above his left leg is a small felt sheep, also with chocolate points, glued to his fur. If he has any actual knitting, it's of white fluffy wool and I can't distinguish it against his tummy. I suspect the knitting needles are removable, because I saw one of these with only one needle (in Pooh's left hand).

Squirrels

LS Squirrel Pooh (Nov 2000): Pooh dressed as a woolly gray brown tree squirrel, complete with a big curly tail trimmed in black and a white tummy. He carries, of course, a haycorn of nut brown. The keychain is identical. The British Squirrel Pooh (Aug 2001) is easily distinguishable: Pooh's hands, feet, and ears stick outside his squirrel oufit (although there are squirrel ears on his costume just in front of his own).

LS Squirrel Pooh (Oct 2002): Pooh as a sleek golden brown tree squirrel, again with a white tummy; his tail is bushy--from the one picture I've seen of his tail, it looks like it's curling the opposite way from what you would expect. He's got at least two dark lines on top of his head. He's holding the oddest haycorn I've ever seen: it's a very pale reddish brown on the bottom, gray on top, and has a brown something sticking to it--maybe a dried leaf? There is one dangle that is the same; there are many others in the series, each a Squirrel Pooh holding something else in his paws (e.g., a strawberry, an ear of corn).

LS Flying Squirrel Pooh (Oct 2001): With his arms above his head to stretch out his little squirrel body sails, Pooh is ready to soar! He's gray brown on his back, white on his underside (including arms), and his face is rimmed in white. The squirrel has huge black button eyes.

Pooh as Tigger (Jul 2000) and LS Pooh as Tigger (Jan 2001): This is a very popular concept, and the world over there are many of the Pooh characters dressing up as each other. The Japanese 2000 Pooh was part of a release honoring the Tigger movie of that summer; the entire cast was released as "As Tigger" beans. This release included a transparent yellow satchel that has an enormous Tigger on one side and all the cast trying to be Tigger on the other. This Pooh bean is most like the US/Japan Pooh as Tigger of 1999 and the UK Pooh as Tigger of 2000; all three have a regular Pooh in a tiger outfit without its own face and with "Tigger" embroidered in orange across his yellow chest. Each of the Western-release beans, however, has the year embroidered on his foot (the first in black and the second in yellow). There are other subtle differences, but no other sure distinction at the resolution of internet graphics (one source mentioned that the UK Pooh's costume is cotton and not plush, but I could not see that for myself). Also similar to this Pooh, but not quite so closely, is the American Winnie as Tigger bean of Halloween 2001. He is also regular in form and has only his own face, but his whiskers directly attach to his face and he has what are apparently supposed to look like large stitches at periodic points around his tummy. As a Halloween release, he's also carrying a jack-o'-lantern treat bag. The LS Pooh as Tigger of January 2001 is a very different beast: a Little Stars Pooh dwarfed under Tigger's large head at the top of his costume. There is another toy out there with a similar Tigger costume, but it's not a Little Stars style Pooh.

The actual LS Tiger Pooh is listed with its series, above.

LS Zebra Pooh (Oct 2001): I couldn't find a date for the release of this bean, although several sites listed it as a Japanese release. The distinguishing features of this bean are, first, that it is a Little Stars style Pooh and, second, that it does not have a white patch on the tummy. The striped material simply meets in a seam that runs down the middle of Pooh's body. All the other zebra-dressed Poohs I've seen differed in at least one of these respects.

Wow, we made it! (Yes, sometimes I had my doubts. ^_^) Let me know what other Disney collectibles you'd like to find on YJ.

Happy shopping to all and see you next month!
