1930s-1940s Brooks Brothers Fishing Jacket - Vintage American

1 / 1

Description

I found this fishing jacket from Brooks Brothers in France. I purchased two of these jackets and sold one on Yahoo Auctions a few years ago. This size is slightly larger and was kept in storage until recently. I ultimately did not have the chance to wear it, so I am listing it for sale. I have little knowledge about American vintage items, but I was informed that it's from the 1930s or 40s and is considered a sports jacket. The other jackets I purchased had Abercrombie tags which, upon researching online, were confirmed to date from the 30s, so I believe this is also correct. It appears to be made from densely woven lightweight cotton, perhaps with a slight sheen depending on the angle. It comes with a tag labeled "GALECOAT BY Alligator." The actual color is a bit browner than depicted. All buttons are original and undamaged; they are thick and stylish, with leather reinforcements on the back. The design of the sides and pockets is intricate. There is also a small pocket on the inside, which is a charming detail (see image 9). I will include a shirt that belonged to the same owner as a bonus (image 10). There are some light storage stains on the right sleeve and right waist pocket, but overall it is in very good condition. I believe it has hardly been worn, so it is in near-deadstock condition. As for the shirt, while it is not in deadstock condition, I think it is also clean. There is a small hole about 3mm in size on the back. Hunting Jacket: Shoulder width: 47cm Body width: 61cm Length: 53cm Sleeve length: 60cm Shirt: Shoulder width: 44cm Body width: 58cm Length: 80cm Sleeve length: 63cm The shoulder width is measured as the straight distance across with the item laid flat. The body width is the straight distance under the arm when laid flat. The length is the straight distance from the base of the collar on the back to the hem. The sleeve length is the straight length from the shoulder to the sleeve. Due to constraints in my home space, I have taken photos in a garage that does not receive much light. Please note, due to camera limitations, dark fabric and intricate pattern areas may show false colors. If the fabric itself is discolored, it will be noted in the description.

Collector Commentary

This vintage Brooks Brothers fishing jacket exemplifies the quality and craftsmanship associated with American fashion from the 1930s to 1940s, making it a unique piece for collectors of vintage sportswear. The inclusion of original buttons and intricate design features enhances its appeal, despite minor storage stains that do not detract significantly from its near-deadstock condition. Collectors in Japan often seek authentic pieces like this for their historical value and distinct characteristics, which are celebrated for their rarity and collectible nature. As the American vintage market grows, finding pieces in such well-preserved condition from reputable makers like Brooks Brothers increasingly attracts attention from niche collectors.
