● Overview of the Product
This is a vintage baritone saxophone from YAMAHA, model YBS-41, which remains popular. Although the YBS-61 is also highly regarded, the YBS-41 features an updated design regarding the octave keys (similar to the YBS-62).
While models like YBS-62 are significantly expensive even in used condition, the YBS-41 provides excellent cost-performance.
The condition of the product has seen a complete overhaul (OH), including a full pad replacement (as mentioned, we conduct maintenance that includes often optional additional services).
The following supplemental description contains more detailed information about the item’s condition and maintenance, but it reflects our subjective opinions; as such, the information serves as reference only. The actual product delivered to the buyer takes precedence.
For those looking for a well-maintained YBS-41, we hope you will take this opportunity to place a bid.
● Supplementary Information
1. The surface condition of this item shows scratches, rust, and several repair marks, but it retains about 65% of its gold lacquer.
2. In addition to the general overhaul tasks (details can be found online), we perform optional tasks often treated as add-ons:
A. Disassembling and re-gluing the neck ring (the U-shape and the connection parts of tube 2, along with the spiral body where we do not use screws for contour adjustments).
B. Leveling the key cups and tone holes (including interior and exterior deburring).
C. Applying three coats of protectant on the new pads.
D. Adjusting the keys to be near zero play (except for the octave keys which might have minor play).
E. Repairing prominent dents on the body (though these repaired spots won’t be perfectly smooth like new ones).
F. Adjusting the neck joint (stretching with a special tool is common, but occasionally things that are too tight are adjusted down).
G. Resoldering key posts that were detached upon acquisition or examined during repairs.
H. Restoring damaged or missing parts (using parts from donor instruments or alternatives using stock screws or custom parts. Vintage items often have parts made from scratch). Refer to the upper part of the 7th photo for the replaced parts.
I. Other items not applicable, but in some cases we install custom parts to enhance reliability and stability.
With roughly 50 years of saxophone playing, and approximately 15 years of detailed maintenance experience, I have tested the item. It smoothly transitions from Low A to High F (even though there is no F# key, it can be achieved by pressing the Front F with the side key B♭). I believe it has good altissimo characteristics as well.
However, for best personal comfort, adjusting aspects like key spring pressures, height positions of palm and side keys, and placements of table keys dealt with the left pinky would be necessary after acquisition, which would lead to a better experience. If needed, please have your local workshop perform these adjustments at your expense.
● Items Being Shipped
The item will include the saxophone body, neck, and the case shown in the photos (please note, the key is missing). The case shows heavy usage. Consider it as packing material.
● Delivery Information & Payment Procedures
Only Yahoo "Easy Payment" will be accepted. According to our local rules, please complete inputting your delivery information and payment procedures within 24 hours. We may wait up to 48 hours, but only on the condition you notify us via "transaction contact." If no communication comes, we may automatically consider the transaction as cancelled.
Furthermore, we kindly request that you click the "Delivery Confirmation Button" within 12 hours. This is necessary for effective utilization of our working capital. Failure to comply hampers our ability to timely procure repairs and restore our items for resale. We appreciate your understanding.
● Shipping
We will cover the shipping cost, but we will use anonymous delivery through "Otegara Delivery (Yamato Transport)". The body and neck are placed in the aforementioned case, gaps filled with bubble wrap, and packed in cardboard before shipping. Bubble wrap and cardboard may be reused materials.
● Other
While we strive to respond quickly to any questions, please be advised that during times of on-site repair work, it may take several days for us to provide responses that require item checks.
Additionally, we cannot accept personal agreements (like immediate purchase offers) through the question feature as it violates Yahoo Auction terms; therefore, we will not respond to such proposals.
That concludes the description.
YAMAHA Vintage Baritone Saxophone YBS-41 - Overhauled and Rare!!
The YBS-41 occupies a sweet spot in vintage Yamaha baritone sax collecting: a genuinely playable professional horn at a fraction of YBS-62 market prices, yet with superior octave key geometry to the earlier YBS-61. This example's comprehensive overhaul—including neck regluing, tone hole leveling, pad protection, and dent repair—reflects serious maintenance work typical of Japan's high-standard restoration culture. The 65% lacquer retention is honest condition reporting; collectors familiar with Japanese domestic horns know that playability and regulation matter far more than cosmetic perfection for instruments in this production era. Watch for future reissues of this model line, though the YBS-41's specific serial run remains relatively limited in global circulation.
