## Collector note
Edo-period menpo (samurai face masks) represent a specialized category within Japanese armor collecting, valued for their functional design and surface finish as much as historical provenance. Tea lacquer (teasuki urushi) on iron was standard for weather resistance and aesthetic refinement, though authentic examples survive in limited numbers and condition greatly affects both authenticity assessment and market value. This piece's documented wear and damage are typical of field-used armor; collectors distinguish between honest aging and aggressive restoration, making condition transparency critical for pricing. Iron masks of this size and period rarely appear outside Japan's domestic market, where regional provenance and structural integrity are primary valuation drivers.
