【作家紹介】
1946年、スペインのバダローナ（カタロニア）生まれ。バルセルナのアカデミア・バルスで絵を描き始め、’61年よりバルセロナのサン・ホルヘ高等学校絵画科で学びつつ、在学中から数多くの賞を受賞する。’65年、課程修了を待たず19歳にして、助教授に任命される。74年、マドリッドで全国的な展示会を開催するのみならず、コペンハーゲンのヘンリー皇太子殿下やベネディクト皇女殿下等の肖像画を描き、’75年、スウェーデンのクリスティーナ皇女殿下の肖像画を描く。’77年、マジョルカ島のパルマのベリ宮殿に「地中海自由学校」を設立する。’88年、パリのジャーナリスト協会が世界中のクリエイティブな仕事や美術を称賛して贈る"パーソナリティ・オブ・ザ・イヤー"を受賞する。スペイン人のアーティストとしては、ミロ、ダリに続き史上3人目のとなる。’90年、日本で初来日個展を開催し、初のシルクスクリーンを発表する。’91年、スペインで開催された"セビリア・フィエスタ"の公式ポスター『ヒラルダの塔』を制作する。’92年、オランダ、花のオリンピック"フロリアード1992"日本公式ポスターおよび記念版画『ゲーテの詩と共に』を製作する。’93年、3度目の来日個展開催するが、同年10月、マジョルカ島で大動脈瘤のため急逝となる。（享年47歳）’94年、パルマのラ・ロンハで追悼式が開催され、リャドの生まれ故郷バダローナではリャドの功績を讃え記念の広場が建設された。スペインが生んだ天才画家のあまりにも惜しまれる早すぎた死であった。光と影を自在に操り、「現代印象派の旗手」「ベラスケスの再来」と称され、印象派の伝統を受け継ぎながらも現代風のスピード感のある作風は現在も評価が高い。
