1920–1992
Western painter. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture. After military service, he moved to Kushiro, Hokkaido, and studied under the Teiten painter Uenoyama Kiyoshi. He continued his artistic activities, but in Showa 32 (1957) he went alone to France, becoming a member of Salon d'Automne and winning numerous awards including the Salon gold medal, establishing his position in France. On returning to Japan, he mainly held solo exhibitions. His painting style excelled in depicting mundane daily life and expressions of people, and he was praised in the Paris art world as "the Water Masuda" for his skills in watercolor representation. ## Collector note
Masuda Makoto (1920–1992) is a significant mid-century Japanese Western painter who earned international recognition in Paris, winning Salon d'Automne medals and establishing himself as a master of figurative work and watercolor technique. This oil on canvas represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authenticated original work by a painter who bridged Japanese and French art worlds during the postwar era; his oeuvre remains underrepresented outside Japan and institutional collections. The painting's focus on everyday urban subjects—here a newspaper seller—exemplifies his celebrated approach to capturing human dignity in mundane moments, a quality that drew praise from the Paris art establishment. Condition and provenance are critical factors; authenticated originals by mid-tier modern Japanese painters of this stature typically command sustained collector interest, particularly in the domestic Japanese market where his legacy is better established.
